    • Matte Painter - Montreal

      Our Montreal studio is currently looking for a Matte Painter.

      Job Responsibilities:

      • Create photorealistic backgrounds and environments to match the overall look and feel of the film,
      • Combine skills in painting and 3D animation with knowledge of design, photography, and digital modeling to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional images for film,
      • Contribute to the visual and technical attributes of the production.

      Requirements:

      • Skilled in painting photo-real images using photo reference to create the highest quality digital set extensions, skies, elements, and environments,
      • Strong traditional art skills including knowledge of color, lighting, perspective, and composition,
      • Advanced 2D skills in Photoshop with 3D experience, preferably in Maya,
      • Ability to complete work within the bid timeframe, while maintaining constant communication with production teams and other CG artists,
      • A Bachelor's degree in illustration, industrial design, or fine art preferred,
      • 2.5D / 3D projecting experience is a plus,
      • Strong knowledge of photography is a bonus, especially in relation to lenses,
      • Demonstrable skills in Concept design desirable but not essential,
      • Vue experience would be an asset.

    • Senior Compositor

      Mr. X Inc. is seeking a Senior Compositor

      Description:

      Working closely with Visual Effects Supervisors, Producers and the Compositing Supervisor, the Senior Compositor will:

      • Design, develop and produce large and/or small-scale digital composites for use in feature films,
      • Determine best approach to solve compositing challenges and develop final overall look that far exceeds client expectations,
      • Perform tasks such as tracking, matte extraction, colour correction, paint fixes, roto and assembly of live action and 3D elements.

      Qualifications:

      • Must have at least 3-5 years experience in compositing digital visual effects for feature film,
      • Must have thorough knowledge and ability to use the tools that produce Digital Composites such as NUKE, Shake, Combustion, Flame and Photoshop,
      • Must present a show reel highlighting candidate’s eye for colour, lighting, attention to detail and composition,
      • The candidate must have the ability to work autonomously and meet deadlines
      • Strong communication skills are critical,
      • Candidate must be able to work within a team environment,

    • 3D Animator/Tracking Artist

      Mr. X Inc. is seeking a Senior/Intermediate Tracker/Animator for upcoming feature film projects.

      Responsibilities include:

      • 3D Camera tracking - recreating the movement of a stereo live-action camera in 3D, set extensions - ensuring 3d objects placed in a 3D virtual environment are accurately tracked.
      • Using the measurements and pictures of the live-action set, camera information, distortion grids, and scaling reference of characters and objects to recreate a virtual set in 3D.
      • Matchmoving rigid and non-rigid objects on moving elements in the plate.
      • Removing lens distortion from the plates to aid in the solving of tracks.
      • Creation of high standard animation in a variety of styles.
      • Engaging at every stage of production including generating original concepts and designs, research and development and pre-visualization of complicated sequences including camera work.

      Producing 3D visual effects that far exceed client and audience expectations.

      • 3D modeling, texturing, animating, lighting, rendering as required.
      • Meeting production schedules and deadlines.


      Qualifications:

      • Expert knowledge and experience with Maya.
      • Thorough knowledge of PFTrack or 3Dequalizer (knowledge of Boujou a plus).

    • Modeling/Texture Artist

      We are currently looking for a Modeling\Texture Artist.

      Responsibilities include:

      • 3D Modeling and Texturing for feature films, using a wide range of reference material
      • Work very closely with the shader writers, look development artists and the riggers to generate organic or rigid object models that are suitable for feature film work
      • With guidance from CG Supervisors, helping to determine the best approach to solve 3D challenges and develop final look

      Qualifications:

      • Strong spatial awareness and a good sense of form, scale and proportion, and a keen eye for detail.
      • A full working knowledge of modeling in Maya is required.
      • Ability to deliver a "clean" model with tidy polygon/sub-d placement and good basic UV layout for texturing.
      • Ability to work with Z-brush desired.
      • Knowledge of Houdini would be an advantage.
      • Knowledge of Linux would be an advantage.

      The duties are a mix of CG and VFX shot work, development and maintenance of in-house software, and providing assistance to artists executing production tasks.

      Responsibilities:

      • Working closely with VFX Supervisors to determine best approach to solve effects challenges and develop final look
      • Work with other TDs, art directors and designers to create believable effects
      • Accurately interpret concept art and design from the Art Department
      • Use and understand 3D lighting, effects and compositing tools, such as NUKE
      • Provide input regarding tools and interfaces to improve throughput
      • Producing a final overall look that far exceeds client expectations.


      Qualifications:

      • 3+ years feature film production experience working with Houdini –particle systems
      • Experience with Renderman or Mantra a plus
      • Ability to quickly master proprietary tools and development processes.
      • Ability to design, self-direct, and organize your work.
      • Strong communication skills.

      Mr. X is currently looking for a full-time VFX Supervisor for our Montreal studio, reporting directly to the President.

      Description:

      • Collaborate to establish efficient delivery workflow, technical pipeline and methodology,
      • Deal with the technical and logistical creative issues relating to visual effects that arise on set,
      • Act as a partner and guide to digital producers in achieving the look of the film within the technical parameters, scale and scope of the production schedule/budget,
      • Provide technical, artistic and creative leadership to a dynamic team of artists,
      • Responsible for devising and communicating creative ideas and accurate information to a diverse range of people,
      • Supervise early development testing and R&D; needed for tool and pipeline development.
      • Supervise “dailies” sessions whereby work is evaluated and timely feedback is provided

      Prerequisites:

      • 4+ years feature film experience as a visual effects supervisor,
      • On-set supervision and data collection experience is required,

    • Studio Tools Developer/Software Engineer

      Description:

      As an in-house Software Engineer at Mr X you will:

      • Maintain and develop XRender, a set of proprietary software tools that manage the studio�s distributed rendering
      • Develop new tools and applications to assist CG artists in managing resources, render processes and CG assets
      • Provide support to individuals using these tools
      • Develop and distribute new systems and scripts and maintain relevant versions and libraries
      • Troubleshoot specific technical production related issues with artists
      • Research emerging industry trends in 3D animation and computer graphics with the goal of upgrading and improving the Mr. X production pipeline

      Qualifications:

      • Bachelor�s degree in Computer Science or other technical degree with 1+ years experience in a software development environment required
      • Shell and scripting language such as python, TCL, or perl required
      • Experience with C or C++, java, OpenGL
      • Experience with computer graphics production including experience with MAYA API, SL (Renderman shading language), Mental Ray API

    • VFX Technical Director

      The duties are a mix of CG and VFX Shot-work, to continue development of in-house software, and to provide assistance to artists executing production tasks.

      Responsibilities:

      • Primarily responsible for the development of visual effects and/or VFX systems for Feature Film under the guidance of a departmental project lead.
      • Work directly with artists to define simulation workflows and interfaces, address shading issues, lighting and rendering challenges.
      • Build and maintain the VFX toolset (Houdini OTL's, Maya MEL scripts).
      • Assist in the on-going development of the production pipeline software (mostly python and C++)

      Requirements:

      • At least 3 years feature production experience as a Technical Director including experience with Houdini, Maya/MEL, and Renderman.
      • Working knowledge of current VFX practice and photorealistic lighting techniques.
      • Experience with VFX simulation: cloth, particles, fluids.
      • Good working knowledge of python.
      • Experience with C or C++, java, OpenGL, MFC, and revision control (CVS) a plus.
      • Experience with Nuke and Massive a plus.
      • Good knowledge of Unix/Linux a plus.
      • Ability to adapt CG solutions to follow changing production notes in a dynamic environment.
      • Must be detail oriented, organized, have good communication skills, and be able to independently handle a variety of tasks in an efficient manner.

Demo Reel Submission Guidelines

Please send us a DVD of the work that you are most proud of and that best demonstrates your abilities, starting with your most recent work. Music is not necessary. Your demo reel should be limited to 3 minutes in length.

Include a credit list explaining what you did on your reel and what software (if applicable) was used to achieve the effects.

Once your materials have been received we will send acknowledgement by letter or e-mail within 3 weeks. Should a position become available that matches your unique set of skills and talents, we will contact you.
